On May 12, 1950, veteran Los Angeles Times aerospace reporter Marvin Miles rode along in a B-50 as it launched the original Bell X-1 on its last flight. Chuck Yeager piloted the X-1 that day. When Marvin landed, he was met by company owner Larry Bell and presented with this model. It came to me through the extraordinary generosity of Melanie Miles Meyer, his daughter.

• Chad Slattery’s X Planes Model Collection

  For 20 years, I’ve collected vintage desktop models distributed by companies in the aircraft and aerospace industries. In recent years I’ve concentrated on the X Planes, a series of experimental research vehicles that began with the Bell X-1 and continues today through Lockheed Martin's X-55.
  
  

  Here are selected examples from that collection, arranged numerically, along with models that I acquired simply because I found them pleasing. The site focuses on just the models; for information on the actual aircraft, see Jay Miller’s The X-Planes X-1 to X-45 (Midland, 2001) and American X-Vehicles: An Inventory X-1 to X-50 by Dennis Jenkins, Tony Landis, and Jay Miller (NASA, 2003).
